"SEEK"

"There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: the same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him." (John 3:1-2 KJV)

""Seek the LORD while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near. Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the LORD that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously."" (Isaiah 55:6-7 NLT)

Several different opinions are presented on why Nicodemus came to Jesus at night; the most popular one, being that he wanted to stay unseen, as if he did not want anyone to see that he was interested in knowing who Jesus really was. Personally, I have something else to add to that, as it might be that he could not sleep, and needed to know why Jesus was sent from God.

It is apparent by the word, by, as apposed to the word, at, that night was the time in which he choose to come; but there was something that he needed to know; something had drawn him out to seek an answer for something that was picking at his heart. Then again, there is also that chance he was sent, as he uses the term, we, to introduce his inquiry and reason for being there.

Seriously, we need to understand something about who this man is: he is a Pharisee, a ruler of the Jews; he is not the kind of person that will admit that he needs anything or lacks any spiritual instruction or improvements. Most frequently, those that are religious leaders, really don't make it a point of claiming that they are lacking in the area of their expertise. Something that you really don't want to be known among your fellow Pharisees.

Simply put, this is no different than what you might say when you need an answer, but don't want to make your question about you: you make it in general or use the excuse of a friend needs to know. But, if it makes you feel any better, I would not be surprised that there were many others that wanted to know who Jesus was, and what He was sent for; because this was pricking at their hearts.

Before we move any further, the main question that needs to be cleared up, is the motivation for seeking an answer: was it to be enlightened, to satisfy a curiosity; or was it possibly to try and get some further evidence against Jesus, other that just the fact that He said He could raise up the Temple in three days. With that, the answer to that question, I believe, will be found in the reply.

There is such a thing as divine appointments: which is where one is prompted to seek after, while another is waiting for the seeker to show up. This is prompted by the Spirit of God! It is usually a window of opportunity where the heart is ready to receive, and the Spirit of God is speaking; in the midst of the conversation, there is confirmation...

"This is the message we have heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts." (1 John 1:5-10 NLT)
