"If the iron be blunt, and he that do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct." (Ecclesiastes 10:10 KJV)
""Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves. But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me. When you are arrested, don't worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. For it is not you who will be speaking - it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you."" (Matthew 10:16-20 NLT)
Good thing we now have a President that is now standing up for the church; especially for the things we feel are important and the things we care about. Today is the Pro-Life march in Washington; and the Vice President will be attending the rally, with President Trump is speaking from his office by video. He might not be a perfect man, but he is the right man, at just the right time!
Something very dark and sinister is creepy around beneath the surface of all that is happening, the devil does not like to be overruled, and in the case of what happened in the last election, he was! We do know that all of this is temporary and the battle for souls isn't going away; but it sure feels good to have the common sense back into the rule of law and the good sense to follow the laws of God. Especially the right person in office to respect and care for the people of Israel!
If you have the right point of view about this verse, Solomon might be speaking about just the common sense of yielding at sword or trying to chop wood with an axe. If you don't sharpen the edge of your sword or axe, then you will have to put more strength into your swing, in order to make it cut or chop; but, if you hit the right spot, weather it is flesh or wood, even a blunt edge will do the trick.
To make better sense of how this works in the life of a believer, we must first understand that the power we have to overcome does not come from us, but from the Holy Spirit. We can try and try, over and over, but the flesh will always win, if the Spirit isn't the power used to overcome! It really isn't that hard to figure out, especially if you keep repeating the same sins over and over again.
By the way, it really does help to keep your sword or axe sharp, whether or not you are swinging soft or hard, the sharper the edge, the deeper the impact on whatever you hit. This is really two-part action, that makes the Word useful in sharpening the edge, and the Spirit able to give us more strength...
"So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses." (Galatians 5:16-18 NLT)
