"Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him aught to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work." (John 4:33-34 KJV)
"Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:1-2 KJV)
There are few things in this life that are worth sacrificing your life over; but when it is your purpose, it is something that takes on a life of its own. Not too many people get to know what that is like, because by the time they need to fulfill their purpose, they do not even realize that it was there, all along. In this I believe we see the proof of what it is that caused Jesus to have such determination to complete what He was sent here to accomplish.
We could try and rationalize the fact that He knew what was going to happen; which I believe is true; but it still takes something more to than just knowing, coming to terms with, or even being determined to carry it out. It takes the involvement of something that is greater than yourself; something that has given you the purpose, the challenge, or the reason to even have the determination to finish the work.
I don't want to pretend to know anything about the relationship that Jesus had with the Father, except that they were connected in a way that is way over my ability to comprehend. But what I do know, is that they were One before Jesus came, and they One we again when Jesus returned; what that looked like and how that works out, I have no idea.
John's Gospel tries to put some sort of image to that, as he starts by showing Jesus as the Word. Even then, it is still hard to show the connection established here on earth; except to say, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us." Other than that, the only other connection we have is this, the substance of what makes Him, completes Him, and causes Him to keep going forward, no matter what!
Then again, what the heck do I know; I'm just waiting for this crazy ride to be over...
"The LORD of Heaven's Armies says, "The day of judgment is coming, burning like a furnace. On that day the arrogant and the wicked will be burned up like straw. They will be consumed - roots, branches, and all. "But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture. On that day when I act, you will tread upon the wicked as if they were dust under your feet," says the LORD of Heaven's Armies." (Malachi 4:1-3 NLT)
