"Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?" (John 14:5 KJV)
"If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with a divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do." (James 1:5-8 NLT)
Because of my desire to be somewhat good at providing for the things required to live in this world, I can place a little bit of light on the situation Thomas has in understanding what Jesus is talking about; the real point to his misunderstanding is the place, as in, a place that does not belong to this world! What we do in this world, for the life in which we are living, that is something we will try to control, but we should not, because our loyalty for living must remain in God's hand!
In other words, this is all about perception and where our treasure is and how we get through this life; Who it is that gives life and takes life away! We are instructed to ask God for those things that we might need, and to thank Him for all that He gives; yet, there are many things we take on or go after, without even asking God if it is something we should have.
Maybe it's just me! But I seriously doubt that, as I know full well that there are many brothers and sisters that feel sorry for certain things that they have gotten, and now that they have it, it has become a burden or a discomfort in their lives. It is really all about listening to and obeying God! He really does know what is best for us, if we would just learn how to trust Him!
Most of what I just said was for my own chastisement, as I am one the hard-headed people, I know, that fails to properly listen. We that focus upon the physical things that are all around us, forget way to often about the spiritual things that are more important...
"Dear friends, even though we are talking this way, we really believe it applies to you. We are confident that you are meant for better things, things that come with salvation. For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do. Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true. Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God's promises because of their faith and endurance." (Hebrews 6:9-12 NLT)
