"What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?" (John 7:36 KJV)
"But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ's triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this? You see, we are not like the many hucksters who preach for personal profit. We preach the word of God with sincerity, knowing that God is watching us." (2 Corinthians 2:14-17 NLT)
As I have said before, John is completely focused in the area of Christ's Divinity, the simplest statement of judgment against who Christ is, he brings it out into the open, making the truth be known; both the truth of Christ's authority, and the nature of those that oppose Him. As with this statement they are concerned with and what it actually means: He came from the Father, and to the Father He will return, period!!!
Additionally, as Paul expresses, this perfume like sensation that is put forth, is just the same as the effect that Jesus had upon those that would have no part in Him. Those that accepted who Jesus was, His words were a sweet aroma that they loved to smell; but those that rejected Him, His words were stinky and made them feel nauseous, turning their hearts to stone.
Basically, they could not receive it, because they could not receive it! "They hate us 'cause they ain't us!" You can call it jealousy, which many believe is what caused Satan to become what he is now. Oddly enough, this is envy: that means, covetousness. Something most, if not all of us have a little touch of...
"But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit. Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said, "You must not covet." But sin used this command to arouse desires all kinds of covetous desires within me! If there were no law, sin would not have that power. At one time I lived without understanding the law. But when I learned the command not to covet, for instance, the power of sin came to life, and I died. So I discovered that the law's commands, which were supposed to bring life, brought spiritual death instead. Sin took advantage of those commands and deceived me; it used the commands to kill me. But still, the law itself is holy, and its commands are holy and right and good." (Romans 7:6-12 NLT)
