"Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went." (John 6:21 KJV)
"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." (Revelation 3:20 KJV)
There are to ways to look at the word, "impossible," going forward, and looking back; either way, they should be a way to encourage and give us hope. If you look forward, it is impossible for us to fail, because God has promised us to get us through to the other side; looking back, it is impossible for God not to forgive us, because He says that He always would.
This little bit of a skip, from here to there, "immediately," is what some might consider as something that is impossible; how can a ship travel from the middle of the sea, or lake, whatever you wish to call it, it was still impossible, for a ship, to immediately go from one spot to another! Maybe John just imagined that it happen that way; much like we might imagine sometimes that we have been forgiven of our sins!
If you look at the story through Matthew's and Mark's telling of the events, there's is a little different version; as they both say Jesus instructed the disciples to get into the ship and go to the other side, while it appears to John's version that they had been waiting for Jesus to join them. Then when it come to the journey across, Matthew and Mark say it like they all went over, as if it was a normal trip.
Not that the two do not have use of the word, "immediately," because they both did: Matthew used it to express how fast Jesus grabbed Peter's hand when he began to sink; Mark used it to express the speed Jesus talked to them, when they were struck with fear, after they saw Him walking on the water. Does anyone see that there is something that needs to be figured out here?
Just imagine what it might have been like: a little confused, a little bit excited, a little overwhelmed; maybe just a little bit at a lose for words. Whatever the case, everyone has there own special journey through this crazy life, but when we have Jesus, one way or another, we get to the other side: Guaranteed...
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9 KJV)
