"That evening Jesus' disciples went down to the shore to wait for him. But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn't come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum. Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough. They had rowed three or four miles when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified, but he called out to them, "Don't be afraid. I am here!" Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!" (John 6:16-21 KJV)
"But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passeth through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee." (Isaiah 43:1-2 KJV)
The way I see it, Jesus used this moment as a way to show the disciples a very important part of who He was, based upon all that we see, all that we think we know, and the matter of time. Sometimes we just need a little peek into the other world that is around us, as a reminder that things aren't always the way they appear.
It might not mean all that much to some people, but there are forces in us and around us, so small and powerful, that if they could be increased in size, let's just say, our whole understanding of what matter is would change in an instant. There is just something about space and time that we really known hardly anything about. There are speculations and theories about all sorts of things; some of which, many of the most intelligent minds still know nothing about; they just make things up to satisfy their curiosity and to get grant money to keep making stuff up.
Be that as it may, if they would put more time comparing God's word into the things they were looking at, or looking into, they might actually grow some intelligent knowledge about how the whole universe works. Then again, it might actually give them a chance to learn something even more important than how the universe works: A chance to know God, the Creator of all heaven and earth...
"But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God." (Romans 1:18-20 NLT)
