"Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?" (John 3:4 KJV)
"Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he must trust in the flesh, I more: circumcised the eight day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is the law, blameless. But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ." (Philippians 3:4-7 KJV)
Some might assume that Nic was mocking Jesus, as if he was trying to be sarcastic by questioning with such a crazy response, as a grown man entering into his mother's womb, to be born a second time. But in defense of Nic, I truly believe, based upon the response we shall see, that he was simply inquiring about what Jesus might have meant. After all, this is a man that is seeking answers.
Better yet, I truly believe that Nicodemus was prompted to go to Jesus by the Holy Spirit; therefore, it is also safe to assume, Jesus knew firsthand why Nicodemus came; and, that Jesus was eager and willing to enter into this conversation. For the most part, Jesus always knew when He was being setup or tricked into providing answers, especially by the Pharisees; so it is also safe to assume, Jesus was being totally and completely open with Nicodemus.
Besides that! This is the Holy Word of God! Do you understand what that means? This is a divine appointment that is Divinely administered by God! This is not just about Nicodemus, this is about the impact of this encounter through all eternity! How many people have surrendered their lives to Christ based upon hearing or reading this portion of Scripture; it is impossible to determine: only God knows!
Based upon the fact that we know what we know, a single salvation can cause a splash, rippling into thousands of addition splashes, let alone, the impact made from the very first splash! This is that splash! And, there is a difference between Enquire and Inquire; one wants to know; the other needs to know...
"No one can know a person's thoughts except that person's own spirit, and no one can know God's thoughts except God's own Spirit. And we have received God's Spirit (not the world's spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit's words to explain spiritual truths. But people who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can't understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. For, "Who can know the LORD'S thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?" But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ." (1 Corinthians 2:11-16 NLT)
