"Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun." (Ecclesiastes 9:6 KJV)
""For in death the wicked cause no trouble, and the weary are at rest. Even captives are at ease in death, with no guards to curse them. Rich and poor are both there, and the slave is set free from his master."" (Job 3:17-19 NLT)
For those that might not understand, we really only have one chance to get this right! Solomon might have done some things that were over the top; but one thing he wasn't, he never set out to harm anyone, to kill anyone, or to be a wicked king. And, when he came to his senses, this is what he understood: once we die, we have no more portion to do anything, here, under the sun!
This might be the reason there are tears in heaven, because we still remember those we wronged, those we didn't try hard enough to save, and those we should have loved more than ourselves. This life is for us to be a vessel for the Lord to work through. If it was just about us getting saved, the Lord would take us home as soon as we accepted Him as Lord.
As I said several posts ago, we most likely have all experienced each and every one of those things that have caused the seeds to fail: taken up by the enemy, have no roots to grow due to lack of faith, and be choked out by a love for the things of this world. It is just life here under the sun; the longer we live here, the more chances there are to be taken off guard or go down a wrong path.
We could find a mirrored image of the normal Christain life, by looking at the life of Israel, and all the different paths that they followed, which led them away from God. That's not to say that we can't be as good as we should, because we can, if we die to ourselves and seriously do all that the Spirit tells us to do!
Life happens, whether you know it or not, just thinking about doing those things, that is portion enough to sin, just by living them out in your mind, they take a part of your heart...
""You have heard the commandment that says, 'You must not commit adultery.' But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart."" (Matthew 5:27-28 NLT)
