"And this also is a sore evil, that is all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?" (Ecclesiastes 5:16 KJV)
"For it is impossible to bring back to repentance those who were once enlightened - those who have experienced the good things of heaven and shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come - and who then turn away from God. It is impossible to bring such people back to repentance; by rejecting the Son of God, they themselves are nailing him to the cross once again and holding him up to public shame." (Hebrews 6:4-6 NLT)
If you have studied this passage of Scripture, then you should be aware that this passage is meant to show us something that we are not, because those who have truly tasted and believed, even though they might fall or wander off the path, they do not turn from God! Oh, I have been there, on the wrong side of the road; where you know you don't belong, but you hang out there anyways, expecting to come back after you get your fill of whatever it is you expect to get full of. But it doesn't happen! You will never satisfy the hunger for sin, because it consumes the appetite that it brings, making you crave more.
This is something that we must figure out on our own, because it is between you and the Lord! As it were, yesterday I heard a message with this same topic, speaking about those who turn away from God. We have a glimpse of something that cannot be taken away; if that is, we have the right reason to come to the Lord. If we came for a better life, we end up disappointed. If we came to be free from sin, we get overwhelmed by the struggle. If we came to be set free from bondage, we will be bound by the things we cannot ignore.
We came to Jesus because He has offered us eternal life! This does not perish, because it is eternal, and will not fade away! You cannot replace that with anything, no matter how hard you might try, you will find yourself getting totally and completely disappointed! Therefore, you surely won't turn away from God!
I don't care how far off the path you might go, if it takes you the brink, you will still realize where you truly belong! Then, as crazy as this might sound: You will realize you are there, right in His arms...
"Dear friends, even though we are talking this way, we really don't believe it applies to you. We are confident that you are meant for better things, things that come with salvation. For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do. Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true. Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God's promises because of their faith and endurance." (Hebrews 6:9-12 NLT)
