"One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever." (Ecclesiastes 1:4 KJV)
"You spread out our sins before you - our secret sins - and you see them all. We live our lives beneath your wrath, ending our years with a groan. Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away. Who can comprehend the power of your anger? Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve. Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom." (PSALM 90:8-12 NLT)
No, this is not some sort of mistake, because nothing under the sun will remain for ever! Call it a slight variation in things eternal, meaning the things which will be written in the Books that will be opened before God on judgment day! These are things which will judge the earth dwellers; those who have denied the Lord, having chosen to challenge God Almighty on His day of judgment!
Again, I really want to express the importance of Solomon's reason for sharing this teaching, because it gives off the humanistic view of looking at life, while at the same time contrasting the spiritual side, like a sucker-punch to the heart! Remember, there are many, so called believers, that say they believe, but live out their faith as if they were secular humanist, living their lives nondependent upon God.
They call out to Him when they think that they need Him, but as soon as there doing fine, He never gets the time of day! Maybe they might allow God to be their co-pilot, but most of the time they keep Him locked away in a closet within their heart, for whatever emergency might happen within their life.
Sorry for my rant, but it is more like me sharing my own experience of not allowing Jesus to be Lord! Yes, I confess, there have been seasons of living as if I was the pilot and Jesus was the passenger, tagging along in my life. I know that might sound strange and incredibly wicked, as it should. But when you are taking the wrong road on your journey, you can really find yourself way off course!
Jesus clearly asked, "Why do you call Me Lord, Lord, yet don't do what I say?" (Luke 6:46) This is something that refers to, "Lipsevice", because we use our lips to call Him Lord, yet our heart to far from Him! Interestingly enough, this is something that doesn't happen overnight; it is something that takes time, enough time for us to continually refuse to obey, until God finally stops asking!
As to the point about the earth abiding for ever: they are the things which happen here, from generation to generation, they are what abides for ever! Which is why the judgement of the unsaved souls is not done until the very end, after the Millennium, after the Great Armageddon. After every wicked thing has run its final course, the last ripple has reached the shore; then the full case is put on display!
Yesterday the main question that Pastor Bryan suggested we consider, had to do with 1 John 2:28: "Do you think you will be ashamed before Him at His coming?" After thinking about it, much of the night, I can only see myself saying, 'Yes! Shamefully ashamed!' But that is why there will be those that will be crying in Heaven...
"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth has disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, "Look, God's home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever."" (Revelation 21:1-4 NLT)
