"Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead." (John 6:49 KJV)
"I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not." (Jude 5 KJV)
I believe it was Pastor Robert that I was listening to Sunday morning, as he shared on the meaning of mammon, from Matthew 6:24, as Jesus said, "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other, Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
Looking at the word, "manna," it is very similar to mammon, on so many levels! I know that you have heard this before, but the children of Israel referred to it as Manna, which basically meant: "What is it?" Much the same: What is mammon? Many believe it to be money, or even the love of money; something that is meant to be about choosing money over God. Yes, and no! That is a symptom that is caused by serving mammon; this is something rooted in belief!
Starting in the very beginning, Adam had something special going on in his relationship with God. If there was something Adam might have needed, whatever it was, no matter how important or simple, Adam knew exactly where to go for anything: he went to God! God is the provider for everything: the air we breath, the very food we need; the children we raise, and the opportunities we receive to live a long and prosperous life. You name it, if it is something we need, it is there by the grace of God!
Mammon is whatever else we look for to be our provider, instead of God, in the place of God, or, in the case of Adam, against God's advice! You know the drill: The grass is always greener on the other side. It is pretty much the same substance, only with a little more passion and desire.
Please don't think that this is all about money or giving; because we can only give what we have been already given. If God gives you nothing, you have nothing to give, but your life! That is just a little clue of what anything that really counts, really counts for: Just believe! And if you are doubtful of what it is that you believe, make absolutely certain that you are believing in Jesus Christ!
I am most certain of that: If you put all your trust in Jesus, believe that He came, died, rose again, and now is making intercession for all of your stupid mistakes, you will never have to worry about what is what, or whatever else you think that you need...
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth in the paths of righteousness for his name sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." (Psalms 23)
