PSALMS 124 [A Song of degrees of David.]
I am really encouraged by this Psalm, it teaches us to understand that God is in control and that in all things we are cared for as His, even in spite of lack of faith. In reading this, one can get the feeling that there was something that was overwhelming the people, including David, something that was able to make them feel vulnerable and like prey to whatever it was that had come against them. There is a scenario in which this might easily happen, even to the best of us. The easiest to understand would be the lack of faith in our lives; a simple illustration of that would be the night Jacob was fearful of his brother, before he wrestled the Lord. Another illustration would be when David was in Gath, pretending to be crazy and on the run from Saul. It is in those kind of moments when we are lacking the faith to allow God to show us His protection, and we instead try to protect ourselves, any way that seems right in our own hearts. The reason this encourages me, is because it shows us how God will still protect us, even in our foolishness of trying to do it on our own. The way I see it, is that God allows us to try, knowing full well that it is useless and a waste of our time to do so; but just a the right moment, before we are taken like a bird caught in a trap, He will pull us out and save us from the situation. Call it a lesson in learning to wait on the LORD, or call it learning how it is best not to try and do things our way; whichever way you want to call it, He is still going to protect you! As with the last Psalm, this too shows us how we must remain focused upon the Lord and His promises, even in the face of what might seem utter chaos and where things are out of control. There is nothing that might overwhelm us, that can overwhelm God, absolutely nothing...
"What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31)
