"Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?" (John 18:4 KJV)
"I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies who surround me on every side." (Psalm 3:6 NLT)
Without getting too carried away, I will try to make this simple and straight to the point. As many should know, we have a question that should be presented when there is, "therefore," at the beginning of a verse: "What is it there for?" To be specific, John is letting us know that Jesus had absolutely no fear for His life! As much as He wasn't thrilled about what was going to happen later, He knew full well that this band of men couldn't do anything but arrest Him.
To get right down to it, He was pretty much toying with them, as He stepped forward and asked, "Whom seek ye?" He knew exactly what they were there for, and who it was that they wanted to arrest. But the question is spectacular, and it continues to this day, to be asked: "Whom seek ye?"
When those who come to Christ seeking answers, most likely they will walk away with more questions than they originally had. When those who come to Christ looking for a better life, they will find that life felt better without Him. When those come to Christ for healing, they realize that feeling good for a little while. didn't really help.
Yes, it's true that Jesus has the answers we might seek, can give us a better and more complete life, and can heal us from anything; but none of that is important, if we aren't looking for the Savior of our soul! Better than that, He gives us eternal life, making all those other things seem meaningless and not all that important!
As I think about that I can't help but think a Ray's book, "Hell's Best Kept Secret." There is a portion in his book where he gives an illustration of two men on a plane; one is given a parachute and told, "This will make your ride pleasant and comfortable; while the other man is given a parachute and told, "This plane is going to crash! Put this on and it will save your life!"
The first man was not comfortable with the parachute, as he sat in his seat; and he didn't feel pleasant, as others mocked him for wearing it, so he felt pretty out of place and weird. While the other man, no matter what anyone said, he felt secure; and no matter how uncomfortable it might have felt, he wasn't taking it off!
The question is very important and needs to be asked: "Whom seek ye?" Big question, for a Big God...
"Make sure that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who traded his birthright as the firstborn son for a single meal. You know that afterward, when he wanted his father's blessing, he was rejected. It was too late for repentance, even though he begged with bitter tears. You have not come to a physical mountain, to a place of flaming fire, darkness, gloom, and whirlwind, as the Israelites did at Mount Sinai. For they heard an awesome trumpet blast and a voice so terrible that they begged God to stop speaking. They staggered back under God's command: "Even if an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death." Moses himself was so frightful at the sight that he said, "I am terrified and trembling." No, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the Living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to the countless thousands of angels in a joyful gathering. You have come to the assembly of God's firstborn children, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God himself, who is the judge over all things. You have come to the spirits of the righteous ones in heaven, who have now been made perfect. You have come to Jesus, the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks of forgiveness instead of crying out for vengeance like the blood of Abel." (Hebrews 12:16-24 NLT)
