"For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean." (John 13:11 KJV)
"They are pure in their own eyes, but they are filthy and unwashed." (Proverbs 30:12 NLT)
Here is the point, not to point to others, but to look into your own heart, as one that needs to be washed. Woe to those that think they have it all together, because, thinking you are good enough, makes you bad in the eyes of the Lord. If we could be good enough, then Jesus would not have had to suffer and die for our sins; even those that strive to be good, still miss the mark of holy!
Anywho; we have this thing called self-preservation, which is, oddly enough, something we can hardly know too much about, until something we care about is threatened or being taken away. There are some things we care about, we don't even know how badly we want to have them, until it becomes a thing that we cannot have or hold onto.
Judas was basically a man that was focused on this world; worldly things, such as the one who would come to save, would be the savior of Jerusalem; setting things in order and freeing the Jewish people from Roman rule. The thought of the Messiah being killed, it just didn't fit the plans he had imagined. If Jesus was who he had originally thought He was, he probably imagined himself not just holding the purse, but managing the Treasury.
In his own eyes, he felt as though he was doing something good. We obviously don't see him doing good, because we know it was bad; but people who have different priorities and objectives, they see what they believe, missing out on all the other stuff, even that which is right and truth.
If you take a hard look at all the crazy stuff going on in this world, you will see how true that is. It takes quite a bit of different thinking, to think that it is good, to convince four- and five-year-old children that they are something other than what they are!
I'm sorry if that might offend you! But woe to you, if you think that is good...
"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Who unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!" (Isaiah 5:20-21 KJV)
