"The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way." (Psalms 37:23) Moving on, we come to a portion of this Psalms which shows direction and purpose for those that follow the Lord; not just by following His life, and walking as He walked, but following His direction upon their lives. This kind of movement to the life of a believer requires discipline and submission to the voice of the Lord; not something that we naturally have the patience to adhere to, for our natural tendency is to accept second best, instead of holding out for what the Lord has planned for us. Here in the second part of this verse, I believe we have a test for moving in the right direction, one which verifies that we are doing exactly what the Lord would have us to do; which is, that we delight in the way that we are going. You could honestly look at this portion of Scripture two ways, but it really does not matter, because both ways are pretty much saying the same thing. One way is to look at it the way that I just portrayed it, with "his" meaning the way belongs to the person who is being guided by the Lord; yet if the way that your life is directed is ordered by the Lord, then the second way of looking at "His" comes into play, because it is His way you are living and not yours. Either way, the way is delightful, not just because you know that you are headed in the right direction, but because there is peace in what you are doing, and joy comes in serving the Lord and not our own ambitions. As I look back on my life, those happiest times of my life were when I was following where the Lord was leading, instead of planning my own direction, and then asking the Lord to bless it. He will bless us in our own directions, at least to a certain extent; but we will not feel fulfillment or the peace that we could have felt by doing His will and not our own. For the life of a believer in Jesus Christ, there are always two directions that are laid before us; there is the good direction and the bad direction; one that we will be delighted in, and one that we will struggle to sustain. And then, there is another way we can look at this same portion of Scripture, whereas we see "He" is meaning that the Lord delights in the way that we are going, because we are being led by Him; in which case, we have peace like none other, because we know that we are pleasing to God...
"Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed. I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God. Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him. Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou? Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment." (Ecclesiastes 8:1-5)
