"Life, Light and Liberty" - Oh ya!
"And the Light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." (John 1:5) I think this verse goes very well with Isaiah 9:2, "The people that walked in darkness have seen a Great Light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the Light shined." You see, there was something which took place in the Garden way back at the fall of man, and it had to do with 'light': a word that cuts both ways, and has more meaning than just to be an illumination. 'Phos' (photos) in the Greek means Light. Of light in itself, generally; a light, metonymically; and enlightenment, figuratively. There was another tree which was in the Garden, besides the Tree of Life, and it was called the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil; which was designed as a test of obedience. Oddly enough, man failed the test! What is very interesting to me, is that God knew all along that man would fail; which is precisely why that particular tree was right in the middle of the Garden. Now, the thing which we need to understand about 'Light' and 'Knowledge', is that they are parallel to each other in God's world; in other words, they are 'one in the same'; Light and Knowledge travel together, if you will. The reason that this is quite interesting, is what God said of man, before kicking him out of the Garden: "And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of Us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the Tree of Life, and eat, and live for ever:" (Genesis 3:22) Do you know why there is no Tree of Knowledge in Heaven? Besides the fact that there is no longer a need to test man's obedience; but, because of the presence of God's radiant Light; which is so radiant, that there will be no need for the sun, or the moon, or any other form of light; because He will be the Light! When we look at the word 'comprehended', which is in the opening verse, it means to apprehend, lay hold of, seize with eagerness, suddenness; in other words: the darkness cannot apprehend the Light; nor can it admit or receive the Light. Which really means that the darkness is so thick, that the light could not penetrate it. Quite interesting! Because this seems to cut both ways: on the one hand, there is a Light which lays hold of the darkness; yet on the other hand, there is a darkness which does not understand the light. I guess it really matters which light you are looking at; doesn't it??? "But if our Gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the Light of the Glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the Image of God, should shine unto them." (2 Corinthians 4:3 & 4)
